Camping in the Great Smoky Mountains

The Smokies straddle the North Carolina–Tennessee line, and most private campgrounds sit in the valley towns on either side of the park. This guide covers where to base yourself, when to go, and which stays on the BookMySites network are closest to the trailheads.

Where to base yourself

Whittier and Cherokee (NC) put you minutes from the Oconaluftee entrance and the southern end of Newfound Gap Road — the shortest drive to the park's most-visited overlooks.

Franklin and Waynesville (NC) sit south and east of the park along the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor. Slightly longer drives to the park entrance, but quieter towns, easier last-minute availability, and direct access to Nantahala National Forest.

Swannanoa (NC) is the Asheville-adjacent option: brewery and restaurant access in the evening, Parkway trailheads in the morning.

Greeneville and Newport (TN) cover the north side, closer to I-40 and useful if you are routing through on a longer trip.

When to go

Spring (April–May): wildflowers, full waterfalls, and cool nights. Rain is common — pick a site with gravel pads and good drainage if you are in a large rig.

Summer (June–August): the busiest and most humid stretch. Higher-elevation campgrounds run noticeably cooler than the valley floors.

Fall (mid-October): peak color and peak demand. Weekend sites in the gateway towns are usually the first to sell out, so book well ahead and consider a Sunday–Thursday stay.

Winter: fewer crowds and open availability, but some mountain campgrounds close or reduce services, and Newfound Gap Road can shut during storms.

Planning tips for RVs

  • Mountain roads mean grades and switchbacks — check length limits and approach routes before towing anything over 35 feet into the gorge towns.
  • Cell coverage drops inside the park. Download maps and your reservation confirmation before you leave the campground.
  • Bear-country food storage rules apply on both sides of the line; keep coolers and trash inside the rig overnight.
  • Check each property's live availability calendar for hookup type (30 vs 50 amp) and seasonal open dates before committing to a route.
